About the Discussion Group

The discussion group will feature Advances in Separation-Individuation Theory.

Presenters: Drs. Anni Bergman, Fred Pine, and Henri Parens Discussant: Dr. Harold Blum

Drs. Bergman and Pine, Margaret Mahler's coworkers and collaborators in her research and development of separation-individuation theory, will present updates of their current views of Mahler's concepts, addressing serious criticisms by a number of sources that question the validity of some of Mahler's major assumptions.

Bergman has followed Mahler's original subjects using the Adult Attachment Interview and will present data on developmental challenges of rapprochement beyond toddlerhood. Dr. Pine will further discuss his thinking regarding the utility and significance of Mahler's ideas in developmental theory and clinical work. Dr. Parens will describe the role of aggression in the course of separation-individuation and the developmental effects of this process on aggression.

This session will enhance further understanding of the separation-individuation process in the light of updated research and psychoanalytic theory.
